1/12/2010 - Flicks and Shit + Mix

First of all, here's a new mix

Eddie Kendricks - Goin' Up in Smoke
Donald Byrd - Love's So Far Away
Rapper's Convention - Stupid Fresh
Goodie Mob ft. Outkast - Sole Sunday
DJ Format ft. Abdominal - Ugly Brothers
Hi Rhythm - On the Loose
Styles of Beyond - Underground Sound
Wildchild - Wonder Years

And now: Style Wars
These are two of my favorite movies of all time. New York classic shit. Style Wars was one of the movies that really sparked my interest in graffiti. If you know me, you know how that turned out, but that's another story for another day. My favorite scene is probably where Madseen is putting up a burner and they're arguing between eachother and shit.

Anyway, it's really a classic film and it's one of the most important works in hip-hop history. So if you haven't checked it out, do so. It's good entertainment.

80 Blocks From Tiffany's

80 Blocks is on some slice of life shit. It's really, really good and it's pretty hard to explain. There isn't much of a plot but it's still really entertaining. You get to see how NY was in the 70s, which is regarded as one of its more chaotic periods. Basically, you gotta see it. The Savage Skulls, block parties, decimated city blocks, karateka gang member dude, it's just good.

In other news, I just watched Enter the Dragon and The Last Dragon again. The Last Dragon really doesn't hold up over time, but every time I beat someone in Tekken, I now wanna say SHO'NUFF. Enter the Dragon is just some timeless shit. I just saw Tai Chi Master with Jet Li, it was pretty damn good. It's pretty corny at some points and pretty brutal at others.

Enough about that though.

This is a dope album from the Hiero crew. One of their best releases, which is saying a lot.

3 Men at Chung King is a dope song, listen to it when you get a chance. Plus, Grand Puba mentions Kaity Tong, who is a family friend.

P.S.

Peace

1/11/2010 Sumtunes 1

I think I should start this blog with a song. One Day. One of my favorites.

New(er) shit:

People Under the Stairs (2009)

This little mix I'm putting together includes the single off of their semi-new album "Carried Away." It's called "Trippin' at the Disco." I'm only going to upload the remix version. The original can be found on YouTube here. Great song, great video, much props to those dudes. I'm also throwing in the "Acid Raindrops" instrumental off of the single for that song.

I think this new album hangs up their with my favorite PUTS joints. If you like their sound, then you can't really lose with "Carried Away." Highest recommendation, I shelled out the $15 and it was worth it. If you haven't heard of them before, their most notable songs are probably "SF Knights" and "Acid Raindrops."

Trippin' at the Disco (Remix)

There's also a Dub mix of this song on the 12", but y'all should buy it if you wanna hear that.

Anyway.

Casual vs. Saafir (1994)

These two have a strange past. This battle has been documented several times, so I will just give you the short of it. Saafir had a feature on Casual's first and best effort "Fear Itself." Apparently when the time came around for Casual to return the favor he flaked out on the session and left Saafir hanging. Saafir was angry, and the two crews (Hieroglyphics and Hobo Junction, respectively) decided to settle it on the Wake Up Show.

This is a 12 or so minute excerpt from the battle that really tells the story, it has the important parts.

As a bonus, here's Saafir's debut album that Casual bailed on. I think it's pretty good, it was innovative for sure. Saafir's stuttering style grinds on some people, but give it a listen.

Additional listening:

Totally Insane - "Total Insanity"
